Anarchists claim arson attack on five cars

By Pamela Parkes  Wednesday Nov 26, 2014

Anarchists have claimed responsibility for an arson attack on five vehicles in Long Ashton.

The cars were set on fire at approximately 4am on Tuesday.

The fire caused extensive damage to each vehicle and adjoining houses in Blackcurrant Drive, Perry Road and Brook Close.

Police say they have been informed a group were claiming responsibility for the fires.

Det Chief Insp (DCI) Andy Bevan, of the Major Crime Investigation Team at Avon and Somerset Police, said: “These fires could have easily been life-threatening due to the scale of the damage they caused.

“Smoke damage has spread to the homes next to the cars.

“Families would have been fast asleep during these attacks and it is sheer luck the fires did not take hold of these houses and someone was seriously injured or killed.

“We have been aware of the online claim of responsibility for these attacks and it remains a line of inquiry we are actively pursuing. However, at this stage we are still keeping an open mind about the claim.

“This incident is being treated as acts of arson and criminal damage.”

In the last three years there have been more than 20 incidents across Bristol which have been claimed by anarchist groups, including an arson attack on Avon and Somerset Police’s firearms centre.
