Arena plans recommended for approval

By Louis Emanuel  Wednesday Feb 24, 2016

Plans for the 12,000-capacity £92 million arena behind Temple Meads have been recommended for approval.

The proposals are set to go in front of a committee of councillors on Wednesday next week – a day after the mayor is expected to approve plans for a controversial new multi-storey car park which he initially opposed.

City council planning officers have submitted a report to Wednesday’s meeting urging councillors to approve the designs in the hope the new venue will open by 2018.

Critics had accused the council of not providing enough on-site car parking space. But a concession was reached through updated plans to build a 480-space car park on the Kwik Fit garage site off Bath Road.

Twelve councillors will now decide the fate of the long-awaited arena – five Labour, three Conservative, two Greens and two Lib Dems – through a simple vote after hearing submissions from the public on Wednesday.
