The patrolling officers immediately began first aid on the man in his 30s, who was taken to hospital with injuries thought to be potentially life-changing.

His next of kin have been made aware.

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said: “A cordon remains in place on Woodmead Gardens and you’ll see an increased police presence in the area while investigations continue.

“If you saw what happened or have any other information, dashcam, doorbell or other footage which could help the police investigation, we’d like to hear from you.”

Anyone who can help with the inquiry is asked to dial 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5223127608. Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
