Avonmouth recycling centre reopens with new name
A refurbished recycling centre in Avonmouth will be home to a new reuse shop designed to divert items from going into landfill.
The plan is to use profits from the sale of reusable household goods, such as televisions, furniture and vacuum cleaners, to reinvest in waste reduction schemes as Bristol works to meet a recycling target of 50 per cent by 2020.
A workshop has been built on the newly expanded site to support the drive to reuse and some of the money generated will go to support local charities.

Investment in works at the Avonmouth facility means it now has increased capacity to meet growing demand and more recycling options, so materials that would previously have gone to waste, such as mattresses, can now be recycled.
Commenting on the improvements, Tony Lawless, managing director of Bristol Waste Company, said: “The importance of having the right infrastructure in place to help Bristol waste less and recycle more has never been clearer.
“We are constantly striving to develop a more sustainable city. This exciting new site, with Bristol Waste’s first ever reuse shop, will save valuable resources, offer low cost household items to local residents and help us reach our ambitious recycling target of 50 per cent by 2020.
“We are also pleased to announce that the improvements will give residents reduced waiting times, better access, more materials accepted and a safer environment.”

Mayor Marvin Rees cut a ribbon made from scraps of salvaged materials for the official reopening of the site on Tuesday morning.
He said: “I would like to thank the people of Bristol for their commitment to recycling and looking after the planet. We are proud to be the leading English Core City for recycling, but we know there is always more that can be done.
“By redeveloping this facility, we are supporting residents to increase their recycling efforts even further. The new reuse shop will also allow pre-loved items to find a new home, reducing the amount of items being thrown away and offering people the chance to purchase furniture and technology at reduced prices.
“We also soon expect to announce good news about the development of the Hartcliffe Way reuse and recycling centre, which is a much-needed facility for the people of South Bristol.”

Work to improve Avonmouth Household Waste & Recycling Centre began in September 2019. Now refurbishment is complete, it has reopened with a new name, Household Reuse & Recycling Centre.
The site will now be open seven days a week from 8am to 4.15pm until March 22 2020. Over the summer period, between March 23 and October 19, it will open from 8am until 6.45pm every day.
