BBC Radio 4 and Ujima to join forces

The power of music and its pivotal role in the civil rights movement will be explored at an event organised by Ujima Radio and BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday, November 29.

The focus of the evening will be the song A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke, the timeless number that became an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement in the US and the UK.

Bristol’s civil rights story will be explored with discussions led by Bristol mayor Marvin Rees, councillor Asher Craig and civil rights campaigner Paul Stephenson, poetry from Miles Chambers, Laurence Hoo and Edson Burton, music from the Renewal Choir, and performances from Cleo Lake as Rosa Parkes.

Extracts from BBC Radio 4’s previously broadcast Soul Music programme will examine why Cooke’s song was deemed culturally and historically significant, alongside music from other civil rights activists like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Betty Lavette.

The event will take place in the Trinity Centre from 6pm to 10pm, with Ujima Radio broadcasting the event live on 98FM and online via www.ujimaradio.com.
