Behind the scenes of Doctor Who filming in Bristol

By Louise Cheung  Thursday Feb 9, 2023

Frederick Place in Clifton was recently transformed into a Christmas spectacle for Doctor Who, with the Bristolian townhouses taking on the roles of the homes in Notting Hill, London.

Bristol 24/7 arrived at the scene at 9am on Tuesday promptly, with production already having been set up.

Roads that surround Frederick Place such as Wetherell Place and Meridian Place were all blocked off the entire day for filming, and security in hi-vis jackets, orange cones and road signs alerted the public of this.

For tourists, Clifton might have appeared as a strange place to walk into, as Christmas filled the area and was embellished in various assortments of decoration.

The occasional small snowmen on the balconies and the red and white tinsel with golden baubles sewn into the railings of the houses mimicked the festive spirit created for the Doctor Who special.

The fake sign, Minto Road, replaced the original road name of Frederick Place.

A drone was also spotted gliding through the air early in the morning, with speculation as to what this was for.

More props were unloaded within the hour, suggesting a pivotal moment for the episode was about to be shot later in the day.

Spotted in the distance was the famous Tardis.

Later in the afternoon, actresses Anita Dobson and Millie Gibson were spotted filming scenes.

Local residents walked past the filming appearing to have no interest, instead more keen in getting on with the rest of their day.

At 4:45pm, filming had stopped and what was left were the Christmas decorations on the houses.
