Bristol Airport reveals plans to increase passengers to 15m per year
Bristol Airport could add an extra three million passengers a year as it reveals new plans which also include a larger terminal building, a new hotel, and flights to the Middle East and to the east coast of the USA.
As Bristol24/7 has previously revealed, airport bosses want to increase the current allowance of passengers to 15m per year.
This news comes just two years after the High Court ruled that the airport be allowed to expand its annual capacity to 12m passengers.
is needed now More than ever
A consultation launched on Monday reveals the airport’s ‘masterplan’ to 2040 “to meet the strong and growing demand of people in the region using the airport”.
A new planning application is likely to be submitted to North Somerset Council in 2025 which is also likely to include new taxiways and additional aircraft stands on the airfield, and increased car parking to the north and south of the airport.
Bristol Airport chief executive, Dave Lees, said: “We constantly look at trends in air travel and we’ve been pleasantly surprised that people want to continue to travel by air.
“We’ve seen since the pandemic a real resurgence in terms of people wanting to connect with friends and family across Europe as well as across the world and that will inform our plans as we go forward over the coming years.
“The masterplan will look at what further development might be required to meet this growing demand for air travel and we’d welcome input from people to help shape our plans.”
Lees added: “We recognise there will be concerns about carbon emissions resulting from airport growth and the implications for climate change.
“So we are bringing forward proposals for what we consider to be responsible growth, growth that is both within the current UK carbon budgets required to meet net zero for all emissions by 2050, and with measures to achieve net zero airport operations by 2030.
“Meanwhile, we are also committed to working with partners in our region on aviation decarbonisation.”
