Bristol charity awarded funding for Windrush celebrations
A Bristol charity has secured government funding for a new project celebrating the Windrush generation.
Friends of Hannah More in St Phillip’s was one of four organisations in the South West to receive funding, totalling £6,235.
The charity works to support the Hannah More school community and provide support and welfare to families in need, including grocery and fuel vouchers and community events such as family swims and its annual Windrush celebration.

The Windrush Day Grant Scheme provides funding for local authorities, charities and community groups to commemorate, celebrate and educate about the Windrush Generation and their contribution.
The day was first announced by the government in June 2018 to take place on June 22 each year, to encourage communities across England to celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants.
28 community groups were awarded funding this year for a broad range of projects, with funding totalling over £480,000, and £3.25 million awarded over the last six years.
This year, the maximum funding pot of £38,658 was awarded to Voyage in Hackney, London.
Other organisations in the South West that received funding include Devon Development Education, Recreate Dorset and State of Trust in Taunton.
Friends of Hannah More was lucky enough to also receive the grant in 2023, when they invited a group of Caribbean elders to Hannah More Primary School on National Windrush Day to run interviews with children.
They also held a celebratory event for the community with performances from Bristol’s reggae orchestra, and flags made by members of their multicultural sewing group.
