Bristol could get a fifth constituency in boundary shakeup

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 8, 2021

A proposed new Bristol North East constituency means that it is very likely that our city will be returning five MPs in the next general election.

The new parliamentary constituency is the biggest change among initial proposals for new parliamentary constituency boundaries from the Boundary Commission for England.

The proposals are being made in order to make constituencies across the country have similar number of voters.

The proposals are that a Bristol North East constituency would contain the three Bristol wards of Frome Vale, Eastville, and Hillfields from the existing Bristol East constituency, and Lockleaze from the existing Bristol North West constituency, together with the four South Gloucestershire wards of New Cheltenham, Kingswood, Woodstock and and Staple Hill & Mangotsfield.

The wards of Lawrence Hill and Easton, from the existing Bristol West constituency, and Knowle, from the existing Bristol South constituency, would be included in the proposed Bristol East constituency.

Apart from the inclusion of the Knowle ward in the proposed Bristol East constituency, it is proposed to leave the existing Bristol South constituency otherwise unchanged.

Bristol West – currently held by Labour’s Thangam Debbonaire – would be renamed Bristol Central “to better reflect the nature of the constituency and its relative location among the Bristol constituencies”.

The new Bristol Central constituency would encompass the wards of Ashley, Central, Clifton, Clifton Down, Cotham, Hotwells & Harbourside and Redland: which returned 11 Green councillors out of its 14 council seats in May’s local elections.

Bishopston & Ashley Down ward would be included in the redrawn Bristol North West, which is otherwise unchanged apart from Lockleaze ward moving into the new Bristol North East constituency.

Thornbury & Yate constituency would be expanded to include the South Gloucestershire ward of Pilning & Severn Beach.

Filton & Bradley Stoke constituency would gain the Emersons Green ward from the existing Kingswood constituency.

From the existing Kingswood constituency, three wards from the existing constituency plus the whole of the Staple Hill & Mangotsfield ward are included in the proposed Bristol North East constituency.
