Bristol Green Party councillor standing to be MP in Grimsby

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jun 13, 2024

A councillor in Bristol is standing as a prospective MP almost 200 miles away.

Ed Fraser, the newly elected Green Party councillor for Eastville, is currently campaigning to be elected in the new constituency of Great Grimsby & Cleethorpes.

The seat is a target for both Conservative and Labour, and was where the Sky News leaders’ debate took place on Wednesday.

Fraser’s biography on the Green Party website says that he “runs a successful small business helping people with conditions such as autism and ADHD at work”.

It adds: “He’s an experienced project manager who has worked on local, national and international projects, so he is good at getting things done.”

Fraser’s address is given in Bristol Central on North East Lincolnshire Council’s official notice of persons nominated in Grimsby.

His name was on all of the Greens’ local election literature in Bristol as the person legally promoting the candidates.

Fraser himself was only a last-minute stand-in to be a candidate in Eastville after previous candidate Shaban Ali was suspended following fire alarms being stolen at Barton House.

Fraser told Bristol24/7 that suggestions that his candidacy in Grimsby would affect his work in Eastville are “ridiculous”.

He said: “As a newly elected councillor, I am working hard to represent the interests of the people of Eastville and am enjoying the opportunity to make sure their voices are heard by the new Green-led council.

“As a party that believes in proportional representation, the Green Party is standing candidates across the country to give every voter the chance to vote for our policy platform.

“To help enable this, I kindly agreed to have my name on the ballot in Great Grimsby & Cleethorpes constituency at the request of local members.

“A cursory glance at the polls would tell anyone that I most likely won’t be entering parliament come the 5th of July, so any suggestions that this will affect my work for residents here in Eastville is ridiculous.”
