Bristol leads the robotics race
Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is the largest robotics facility of its type in the UK, and is at the forefront of developing new technology, which academics predict will transform the way we live and work in the future.
The lab is a collaboration between UWE and University of Bristol, and is a hothouse of more than 150 academics, researchers and businesses who are pushing the boundaries of robotics, intelligent autonomous systems and bio-engineering.
Based at UWE, and led by Professor Chris Melhuish, the BRL has a state-of-the-art laboratory, specialist workshops and labs, and two flying arenas with multiple 3D motion capture systems.
is needed now More than ever
Professor Melhuish told Bristol24/7 that the BRL is dedicated to not only pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with robotics but also making the technology accessible and affordable to businesses and industries.
David Willetts, the Minister for Universities and Science, has said the BRL is “spearheading Britain’s efforts to be a world leader in modern advanced robotics”.
The Government announced last summer £150m of investment into ensuring the UK robotics industry keeps pace with the rest of the world and Bristol is at the centre of that strategy.
The Technology Strategy Board said the project’s main aim is for the UK to take the lead in world robot innovation, a market predicted to be worth around £70bn by 2025, and country’s robotics centres in Bristol and Edinburgh have been earmarked to receive more funding as part of it.
