Live: Bristol local election results 2024
8.07pm
Today’s results mean that the Green Party are just short of an outright majority at City Hall but it has been an incredibly successful local election for them. Looking at the national picture, the new electoral map of Bristol also sees Green councillors in every seat within the new Bristol Central constituency, which the Greens will now have even more firmly in their sights at the general election.

Labour have lost a seat to the Greens in Ashley ward. Former Lib Dem candidate, Easton businessman Abdul Malik, is one of three Greens elected here alongside Izzy Russell and Tim Wye.

There’s been a gigantic swing for the Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze ward which has traditionally been a Tory stronghold. Lib Dem candidates Caroline Gooch, Nicholas Coombes and Stephen Williams flipped all three candidates with a total of 9,545 votes. The three new councillors thanked swing voters in the area and said the result was “nationally significant” for the Lib Dems.

There’s been a rush of results at City Academy as the Greens Lorraine Francis and Ed Fraser win Eastville, with Green group leader Heather Mack and fellow incumbent Green councillor David Wilcox re-elected in Lockleaze.
Labour have secured Frome Vale with councillors Al Al-Maghrabi and Louis Martin Greens, and also Hillfields with councillors Ellie King and Kelvin Blake. But it was bad news for former cabinet member Marley Bennett who lost his Eastville seat.

Mark Weston, Bristol’s Tory group leader, said: “I’m delighted. It’s really lovely to be re-elected. It’s humbling that so many people support Bador and myself in Henbury & Brentry. Obviously, a thank you goes to all the other candidates that kept it a clean and, I think, fair campaign in Henbury & Brentry and we’ve got a job to do and we’re going to be doing that for the next four years. Forgive me for not putting the cart in front of the force, but actually at this point, we’re one of the first ones to declare a Conservative ward so I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.”
4.09pm
The Tories are currently the largest party at City Hall after Mark Weston and Bador Uddin were elected in Henbury & Brentry. Okay, they are only the third and fourth councillors to be elected in Bristol so far but this might be as rosey as the picture gets for the Conservatives in Bristol today.

“It’s been a long 15 months to get to this stage but I am proud to be able to continue working hard for Hotwells & Harbourside for the next four years, and to work to turn the whole of Bristol Green,” McAllister said in his victory speech.

3.20pm
The Greens have not just won the Hotwells & Harbourside ward; they have absolutely swept the floor here. Incumbent councillor Patrick McAllister has retained his seat in what used to be a Lib Dem stronghold until a by-election last year. McAllister won 974 votes, Labour 336, Lib Dem 109, Tory 86 and TUSC 26. This ward is one of Bristol’s smallest with only one elected representative.
2.56pm
Hotwells & Harbourside looks likely to be the first of Bristol’s 34 wards to be declared.
2.37pm
Candidates keep a keen eye on the count in the sports hall at City Academy. The wards due to be announced here today are Stoke Bishop, Eastville, Lockleaze, Bishopston & Ashley Down, Henbury & Brentry, Horfield, Westbury on Trym & Henleaze, Southmead, Avonmouth & Lawrence Weston, Frome Vale and Hillfields.

Will we have a ‘Portillo moment’ today? Across England, the Conservative Party has currently lost 192 council seats. In Bristol, they hold 14 seats. ‘Big beasts’ such as Richard Eddy and Mark Weston have bestrode City Hall for decades. Their future as councillors is far from guaranteed.

Turnouts from different wards are slowly being confirmed. So far the lowest turnouts are Avonmouth & Lawrence Weston and Southmead with 26 per cent, with the highest 52 per cent in Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze.
1.51pm
BBC-funded local democracy reporter Adam Postans has created a swingometer out of crisps. This is about as exciting as things are getting so far at the count in Brislington.
1.34pm
This is the scene at Oasis Academy in Brislington. Council staff are in place ready to begin the counts and candidates are milling around in rosettes.

At City Academy, ballot papers are currently being separated into block votes, multiple voters and doubtful papers. Councillors from all parties are watching on as votes are separated.

It’s very strict at these counts. What’s the penalty if one breaks the Official Secrets Act? I think it’s being sent to the Tower of London to be hung, drawn and quartered and then fed to the ravens.
11.46am
Here are the results from the last local elections in Bristol that took place in 2021. (The two Lib Dems in Knowle have sinced formed the breakaway Knowle Community Party and the Greens won the Hotwells & Harbourside by-election.) How much will it change today?
11.30am
Welcome to our live blog of the results of Bristol’s local elections. Counting is due to start at 1pm at two locations, with all 70 seats at City Hall up for grabs.
Results will be declared for each ward individually, with 11 wards being counted at City Academy in Redfield and 23 at Oasis Academy in Brislington.
We’ve already had one election declared today: Labour’s Clare Moody is the new Avon & Somerset police & crime commissioner, but she was elected with a turnout of just over 23 per cent.
