Bristol politicians react to Liz Truss’ resignation

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 20, 2022

Marley Bennett, the Labour councillor for Eastville, says that the incoming prime minister – whoever that person is – “has to call a genny leccy, let’s be real”.

This will follow the recent platty jubes and statey funes.

Cabinet member for public health and communities, Ellie King, joined in the fun, replying to Bennett on Twitter: “Keen to go genny leccy campaigning in the school hollibobs with my Labour famalam to say no no to more BoJo.”

After Liz Truss’ resignation as prime minister on Thursday, Bristol North West MP Darren Jones also called for a genny leccy, simply tweeting: “#GeneralElectionNow”

Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire shared a similar message, just without the hashtag: “The British public deserve a proper say on the country’s future. We need a general election – now.”

Bristol South MP Karin Smyth said: “Those in charge of the current Conservative Party think our country is their plaything – it’s why they just keep shuffling people about. It’s not one Party anymore, no-one can unite them. But regardless the new PM has to seek a mandate from the country. #GeneralElection2022”

Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy played a part in the House of Commons on Wednesday in the debate on fracking which ended in a chaotic vote in which some MPs allege bullying took place.

Outside the House of Commons was someone from Bristol who hopes to enter the building if a general election is called.

Carla Denyer is a Green councillor for Clifton Down and also the co-leader of the national party, who is standing to be MP in Bristol West.

Speaking to BBC News, Denyer also called for a general election.

“We are ready for a general election,” she said. “We’re all pulling in the same direction and we’ve got a fantastic set of policies.”
