Bristol says ‘Slava Ukraini!’

By Martin Booth  Thursday Mar 3, 2022

In emotional scenes, Ukrainians in Bristol sung their national anthem on College Green following a march around the city in support of their homeland.

As well as shouts of “Slava Ukraini” – glory to Ukraine – there was also plenty of anger directed towards Vladimir Putin, with one man burning his Russian passport.

The event began with speeches before protesters walked around the city centre, staying on pavements so as not to block traffic.

Against the backdrop of City Hall lit in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, Green Party co-leader and Clifton Down councillor Carla Denyer also spoke to the hundreds of people who had gathered.

“We want ongoing support for Ukrainian refugees,” said Denyer.

“All Ukrainians must be eligible for asylum and the UK must establish safe routes for them to come to the UK.

“And we must see an end to the influence of Russian money in our democracy in the UK.”
