Bristol a step closer to getting a fifth MP
Marvin Rees has already been spoken of as the first member of parliament for the new constituency of Bristol North East which looks set to be officially created in 2023.
The latest revised proposals for constituencies has been published by the Boundary Commission, with a third and final consultation now open.
Bristol North East is likely to become one of ten new constituencies and is unusually made up of wards within two neighbouring local authorities, including Lockleaze, Eastville and Hillfields within Bristol City Council, and Staple Hill and Mangotsfield in South Glos.

Bristol currently has four parliamentary constituencies and four MPs – which currently are all Labour.
Once the new Bristol North East constituency is created, parties will need to choose prospective candidates for the next general election, with Rees’ term as Bristol mayor coming to an end in 2024.
The new constituency of Bristol North East
The new seat Bristol North East crosses into South Gloucestershire south of the M4.
This gains Eastville, Frome Vale and Hillfields from Bristol East; Lockleaze from Bristol North West; and Staple Hill, New Cheltenham, Kingswood and Woodstock from Kingswood.

The newly created Bristol Central is in effect a shrunken version of Bristol West – currently the largest mainland constituency in the country by population. It loses Bishopston & Ashley Down, Easton and Lawrence Hill.

Bristol East gains Knowle from Bristol South and Easton and Lawrence Hill from Bristol West but loses Eastville, Frome Vale and Hillfields to Bristol North East.

Bristol North West loses Lockleaze to Bristol East but gains Bishopston & Ashley Down from Bristol West; while Bristol South just loses Knowle to Bristol East.
Among Bristol’s surrounding constituencies, Filton and Bradley Stoke – where on Saturday, Labour are expected to select their new candidate, likely to be Clare Hazelgrove – loses Pilning and Severn Vale to Thornbury & Yate, loses Staple Hill to Bristol North East and gains Emersons Green from Kingswood.
