Bristol West: 2019 General Election result

By Caitlin Bowring  Friday Dec 13, 2019

Despite winning Bristol West with a majority of almost 30,000, Thangam Debbonaire could not stop her acceptance speech having a despondent tone.

“This evening has not resulted in the Labour government I would have liked and that certainly in Bristol people have voted for,” she said.

“I will do my best to deliver to the people of Bristol what they voted for.”

The Green Party candidate for Bristol West, Carla Denyer, received more than double the number of votes this year than the Green Party received for the seat in 2017.

Echoing Caroline Lucas, still the UK’s only Green MP, Denyer called for a proportional voting system in the UK.

After her acceptance speech, Debonnaire said that she felt “sad”.

She added: “It’s an honour to serve the people of Bristol West. As for what’s gone wrong, I’m going to have to think long and hard with my colleagues. It’s too early to say.

“It will be hard under the government we hoped not to have, but we always do our best to serve each and every one of you.”
