Bristol24/7: Our sustainability statement
Bristol24/7 believes that, in the face of climate emergency, it is vital to keep sustainability and the environment at the forefront of city conversations,
In November, we announced our ambition to hire a dedicated Climate and Sustainability Editor to help us achieve this. As part of this work, we have decided to take a more organised approach to our own sustainability as an organisation.
In line with the citywide drive to become carbon neutral by 2030, we will continue to review and improve our efforts.
is needed now More than ever
We recognise that the first step is to measure our current footprint and that this will lead to further goals and commitments. We are in the process of measuring our footprint using the carbon accounting software from Spherics and with the help of Action Net Zero.
These are the actions that we are currently working on:
- We will draw up a detailed plan of how we can become more sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact. We intend to set clear goals to this end once our carbon footprint has been measured.
- We already report extensively on the climate crisis and environmental issues in Bristol. By hiring a dedicated Climate and Sustainability Editor, we will expand and build on this work with more coverage of community projects, detailed analysis, interviews and more.
Some of the key goals for the Climate and Sustainability Editor will be to:
– Report accurately on the climate crisis and solutions needed
– Shine a light on the positive changes, actions and people making a difference in Bristol
– Connect people and communities with ideas and projects
– Hold local and national government, institutions, businesses and organisations to account on achieving our targets as a city - We recognise that one of the biggest areas in which we can reduce our impact is printing. We have stopped printing our monthly magazine and transitioned to producing all of our content online. From July 2022, we are committed to printing any future magazines sustainably using recycled paper.
- We are exploring options for sustainably distributing any future print magazines.
- Due to the nature of our work, our editorial team have to travel across Bristol on a daily basis. All current full-time members of staff on the editorial team travel by bike or Voi and we encourage staff to use sustainable transport wherever possible.
- We run a bike to work scheme to further encourage sustainable travel and have secure lock-up and shower facilities in the office.
Through the Better Business initiative, we connect like-minded companies with opportunities to support environmental projects and use collective action to tackle big challenges.
