Buildings being boarded up in Old Market ahead of far-right rally

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Aug 7, 2024

Windows of buildings across Old Market are being boarded up ahead of a planned gathering of far-right thugs outside the offices of specialist immigration lawyers.

It comes just days after a mob attempted to attack a hotel housing asylum seekers.

The rally is being planned on West Street on Wednesday evening, with organisers saying on Telegram there “needs to be a fire burning so bright they will see the flames from space”.

Charities, shops, restaurants and other businesses have been boarding up their premises since Tuesday in advance of possible violence.

Businesses from St Jude’s to Easton are also planning to close on Wednesday.

A large counter-protest and heavy police presence is likely on West Street, but police say that a rumoured march to Stapleton Road is not expected to take place.
