Campaigning begins across Bristol area as general election announced

By Martin Booth  Thursday May 23, 2024

Labour members in Thornbury & Yate were informed on Thursday that their parliamentary candidate for the upcoming general election is recently elected Bristol councillor, Rob Logan.

But party members were also told that “because we have been recognised as a no-win seat, our members have been asked to help canvas in the Filton & Bradley Stoke constituency”.

Over in Filton & Bradley Stoke, the Labour candidate is Claire Hazelgrove who appears to have taken a leaf out of West of England metro mayor Dan Norris’ campaigning playbook by having a dog join her for a photoshoot.

Norris will be up against Jacob Rees-Mogg in the newly created North East Somerset & Hanham constituency, with some commentators predicting a ‘Portillo moment’ if Norris wins.

Another new constituency to be contested on July 4 will be Bristol North East, with Damian Egan – who was only recently voted in as the new MP for Kingswood – likely to return to Westminster in a seat that former Bristol mayor Marvin Rees failed to be selected in by Labour members.
