Car park ‘first piece of the puzzle’ for redevelopment of historic area

By Martin Booth  Monday Mar 7, 2022

“Inspiring and inclusive proposals” are being sought for an area of land opposite St Mary Redcliffe church that is currently being used as a car park.

A design competition for the Portwall Lane site is the second from the city council-owned housing company Goram Homes and the council-funded Bristol Housing Festival, following a previous call-out for designs for one corner of Castle Park.

The car park is described as “the first piece of the puzzle” as part of the longstanding aims to redevelop this area of Redcliffe between Temple Meads and Queen Square.

Goram Homes development manager, Christiana Makariou, said: “The Redcliffe Neighbourhood Forum have had a longstanding vision about the regeneration of this area and we feel that this site can be the first piece of the puzzle.”

The vicar of St Mary Redcliffe, Dan Tyndale, said that the development of the site “has the opportunity to transform the economic, environmental and social landscape of the whole city”.
