Bristol’s Chilean community shows solidarity in candlelit vigil

Bristol’s Chilean community have come together to organise a candlelit vigil to express solidarity with the people who currently protesting in their homeland.

The vigil outside the Victoria Rooms in Clifton was held in support of the general strike convened in Chile after concerns for human rights violations.

Growing anger over social inequalities continues in the south American country as peaceful protests have turned violent and security forces have injured hundreds of people.

Members of Bristol’s Chilean community came together for the candlelight protest

A statement signed by Chilean expats in Bristol says: “We support and encourage the people’s fair demands for change in the current neo-liberal political-economic model, which has created socioeconomic, gendered and racial inequalities.

“We understand these protests as a legitimate response against a systematic abuse of power, denial of social rights and commodification of basic aspects of life, such as education, healthcare, housing, transport, and natural resources and so on.”
