City centre travels back in time ahead of Doctor Who filming

By Betty Woolerton  Tuesday Jun 14, 2022

A collection of curious props have appeared in Bristol city centre ahead of the reported filming of Doctor Who.

On Broad Street, Chez Marcel, a creperie, has been transformed into a toy shop called Mr Emporium.

A peek into its window revealed wooden toys, board games and a cuddly bear.

Meanwhile, all around the Old City lorries containing more props and tech could be spotted, as well as market stalls and graffiti on Clare Street and St Stephen’s Avenue.

Fans are speculating on social media that the toymaker is American actor Neil Patrick Harris, whom BBC announced was joining the show on Monday.

Bristol24/7 understands filming of the time-travelling series will start on Wednesday, but the details are a closely-guarded secret as staff on the set remain tight-lipped.

There have been no sightings yet of new doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, or David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who are returning to the programme for its 60th anniversary.

This is not the first time that Doctor Who has filmed in Bristol. The time lords and ladies have a long-running connection with the city – dating back to 1977 when Hengrove Imperial Park was featured.

In 2021, the New Year’s Day episode called Revolution of the Daleks featured a guest appearance from our city’s most famous landmark, the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Season 14 of Doctor Who will air in 2023.
