Clifton College is making PPE for frontline workers

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday May 13, 2020

An independent school in Clifton has raised £20,000 to support the production of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline workers.

Clifton College’s alumni association, The Old Cliftonian Society, has raised more than £20,000 to pay for PPE materials, which college staff have volunteered to make using the school’s design and technology facilities.

The team at Clifton College have produced more than 2,000 visors so far, distributing them to care homes, pharmacies, hospices, GP surgeries and to volunteers at Caring in Bristol.

The effort has been a collaboration between people from all walks of life, who have previously attended the school. Max Osmond, who works for MSA Manufacturing in Wimborne, has provided a supply of pre-made visors, Piers Martin, who works for Swindon-based Originzone has provided 5,000 labels.

Another volunteer, Ben Whitwell, who runs Teklagraf Ltd in Weston-super-Mare, is producing parts for the visors. Staff volunteers have then been delivering the visors to the various locations.

“We are very grateful for the fantastic response from Old Cliftonians, staff and the local community,” says Clifton College’s director of development, Jeremy Pickles, who helped coordinating funding for the project.

“The project has continued to grow to the point where we are now producing 200 visors a day, which is a great result.”

“We are so pleased that we have been able to put the design and technology facilities to good use in this way,” adds Dr Tim Greene, head of the college.

“We would like to thank everyone involved for all their efforts in helping to provide equipment for our inspiring frontline and key workers.”
