Colourful new entrance to old city walls

By Martin Booth  Friday Aug 11, 2023

A new set of steps has been opened that connect Nelson Street to Tower Lane – a narrow thoroughfare that follows the route of Bristol’s former city walls.

Artist Adam Nathaniel Furman has added a splash of colourful to the steps and Tower Lane with an artwork made from asymmetric tiles.

The work was commissioned by the developers behind the Everards Printworks scheme but has been delayed due to a European shortage of tiles.

The new steps lead down to a cycle lane that has also been beset by problems.

The contraflow cycle lane along Nelson Street closed just a week after it opened in June 2022, having been described as an “unsafe bodge”. Its fencing was then removed by mistake in April before being closed for a second time.

Developer Artisan and Bristol City Council still appear to be at loggerheads as to who is responsible for fixing the route, which has a loading bay splitting it in two close to the new steps.
