Community rallies support to help refugee families
A group of neighbours in south Bristol have come together to help refugee families find a home in their community.
Brislington Welcome, the group of Bristol-based neighbours, are dedicated to helping families from war-torn countries such as Syria and Afghanistan find a safe home, here in Bristol.
They are raising money to find and furnish affordable private accommodation ready for the families to arrive in the UK.
is needed now More than ever
The grassroots community are looking for landlords that are willing to rent a house to a family in need.
They aim to help the family with language learning, as well as support in finding schools and advice on how to navigate the health system.
“We are Brislington Welcome, a group of neighbours based in the Brislington area of Bristol who are working to bring a refugee family to our area because no-one should have to risk their lives to find a safe place to call home,” the group said.
They added: “We know that Brislington is a great place for a family to build a new life, so we have committed to raise funds, find and furnish affordable (private) accommodation, and to help the family to settle in when they arrive.”
The Brislington neighbours have set a target of raising £11,000, so far raising £4,000 from the local community.
To spread awareness and raise money for the families, Brislington Welcome have been to Bristol Hill Market, local park picnics and have distributed fliers and posters around Bristol to help them meet their fundraising target.
They have also hosted question and answer sessions to get the Brislington community involved in the search for a landlord willing to help.
