Covid cases among staff force Bristol schools to send year groups home

By Martin Booth  Monday Mar 21, 2022

Hundreds of children across Bristol are back to home learning due to their teachers self-isolating with coronavirus.

Schools across the city including Cotham and Brunel Academy are being forced to tell entire year groups not to come to school.

Other schools are in the middle of “circuit breakers” on the advice of Public Health England.

In a letter sent on Monday afternoon to parents and carers of children at one west Bristol primary school, the headteacher wrote to say that “a high number of staff” are testing positive for Covid-19.

She said: “We have managed to cover all classes today. As many schools in Bristol are also experiencing similar problems, there is a real shortage of supply teachers.

“The amazing team… are pulling together and as always making sure that the children have a brilliant day of learning, although it is proving increasingly difficult to operate as a school with limited numbers of staff.

“If the situation changes and we are unable to cover classes, we may have to close a year group and set remote learning.”
