Creative app maps the way through Redcliffe’s art scene

By Karen Johnson  Wednesday Jul 24, 2024

A huge new mural and 12 other artworks feature in an interactive app designed to showcase public art on display from Victoria Street to Castle Park.

The Creative Journeys app is part of an art programme commissioned by property group CEG in collaboration with Art Acumen to deliver what they have described as a “landmark” mural for their new flagship EQ Building opposite Temple Meads train station.

A delighted Molly Hawkins, the artist behind the 72 foot mural, said: “The excitement of sharing my work on such a grand scale is absolutely exhilarating.”

Hawkins worked with poet Malaika Kegode on the artwork.

She continued: “Together we spent days uncovering local stories and motifs and the thematic richness of printing and letterpress.

“While I’ve crafted the visual motifs, Malaika has incorporated the historical narrative and poetry. I hope Bristolians, businesses and visitors alike enjoy the environment we have created.”

The mural and other works appear on a map on the app that allows users to travel across the Redcliffe area from one piece of art to another in real time, geotagging each artwork’s actual location.

CEG’s art programme is inspired by architecture, streets, events and local history. The app’s users are promised a journey of discovery that includes paintings, poetry, dance, sculptures, sketches and more.

Catherine Thomas of Art Acumen said: “Bristol is one of those wonderful UK cities that has pretty much everything going for it. Friendly people, world-class culture, stunning architecture and bursting with creativity.

“The EQ public art programme was designed to bring this creativity to the business district; presenting opportunities for the local community to engage with and discover their surroundings in a novel and nuanced way.

“Each artist has meticulously recorded their creative process, offering a wonderful and rare insight into the minds and workings of 12 talented artists.”

The app can be downloaded on both Android and iOS phones, by simply searching for ‘Creative Journeys.’
