Cycle safety to be prioritised on Old Market roundabout
Nine months of work will see what Travelwest promise will be “a much-improved” route created for people walking and cycling over Old Market roundabout.
The work starting on July 22 – funded by the government’s Cycle Safety Fund – will include:
- creating a new segregated pedestrian and cycle route through the centre of the roundabout
- widening pedestrian and cycle crossing points, and improving accessibility
- increasing the amount of greenery and planting within the vicinity of the roundabout
- installing LED lighting to illuminate the route
The existing crossing across Old Market roundabout will be turned into a segregated route for pedestrians and cyclists
Construction is due to finish in March 2020 and will be the culmination of a a series of projects at Old Market roundabout over the past five years which has seen the filling-in of pedestrian subways in 2015, the removal of disused escalator buildings and pedestrian bridge in 2017, and the completion of a new cycle lane on Bond Street South in 2018.
