Cycling around the block the equivalent distance as Land’s End to John O’Groats

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Apr 22, 2020

Dan Cole had planned to cycle the length of the UK this summer before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

So instead of cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, he will be cycling the equivalent distance around his block at home in Cotham.

All the money that Dan raises will go to Above & Beyond’s Bristol City Centre Hospitals Appeal.

This will benefit frontline staff at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust as they deal with the Covid-19 outbreak.

From Friday, the 46-year-old electrician will cycle 378 laps a day for five days. In total, this will equal the 874 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Dan said: “I want to do something positive to help our local NHS hospitals who are doing an amazing job at this difficult time.

“My dad was recently discharged from the Bristol Heart Institute after suffering a heart attack. He had fantastic care and was nursed back to good health which me and my family are intensely grateful for.

“Anyone who has lived in Bristol all their lives will feel that they have a connection to these local hospitals.”

Karlie Evans, Above & Beyond community and events fundraising officer, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Dan for taking on such a huge challenge for Bristol’s city centre hospitals.

“I’ve been blown away by the huge support from the people of Bristol and beyond, and I’m sure Dan will be cheered on by his friends, family and neighbours when he starts the challenge this week.

“Staff at the hospitals are incredibly grateful to everyone for their donations and fundraising efforts, and are really rallied by the Bristol community getting behind them.”
