Darren Jones retains Bristol North West

By Karen Johnson  Friday Jul 5, 2024

Darren Jones has been elected the MP of Bristol North West in 2024’s general election for his third term.

He won a total of 24,058 votes and defeated five other candidates including Mary Page, representing the Greens, who came second but with around a third of Jones’ votes.

Speaking after the results were declared in the early hours at City Academy in Redfield, an overjoyed Jones said: “I am as proud today as I have been at every election, to be elected to represent my home in the House of Commons.

“At this election, our changed Labour party made the case for returning politics to the service of the British people.”

The vote saw a turnout of 65.1 per cent from an electorate of 74,869.

Former Conservative Laura Saunders, who is currently embroiled in a betting scandal and is under investigation by the Gambling Commission, also stood in Bristol North West.

Here are the full results:

  • Scarlett O’Connor (Reform UK): 4,863
  • Caroline Gooch (Lib Dem): 4,159
  • Darren Jones (Labour): 24,058
  • Mary Page (Green): 8,389
  • Laura Saunders (Conservatives *This candidate has been deselected by their party, but their original party description will remain on the ballot paper): 6,773
  • Ben Smith (Social Democratic Party): 222

Speaking to journalists, Jones said: “I am thrilled with the outcome, of course.

“I’m delighted to be re-elected and to have such a level of support across my constituency of Bristol North West.”

Speaking to the media about the Labour’s sweeping win across the country, Jones said: “People across the country were fed up with the last 14 years of chaos and division by the Conservatives.

“They had the opportunity to vote for change and they’ve done so.”

This will be Jones’ third term after he was elected as a Labour MP in 2019 – securing 27,330 votes out of an electorate of 76,273. The seat includes areas of Stoke Bishop, Henleaze, Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston, Horfield and Southmead.

Jones is the shadow chief secretary to the treasury, and previously chaired the Commons select committee on business and trade. He could well get a leading cabinet role with a new Labour government.
