Dazzling Northern Lights show over Bristol

By Ellie Pipe  Saturday May 11, 2024

People across Bristol have captured a rare sight of the Northern Lights dazzling the skies above the city.

The beautiful colourful display, also known as aurora borealis, was visible across the West Country because of one of an “extreme” geomagnetic storm, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The Northern Lights result from collisions of charged particles in the solar wind colliding with molecules in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.
