Despite controversy, liveable neighbourhood project continues
Come rain or shine, Bristol city council continue to move forward with the East Bristol liveable neighbourhood scheme.
On Tuesday morning, the first few flakes of winter snow didn’t stop contractors from installing planters on Barnes Street, in Redfield.
The planters, installed as part of phase two of the East Bristol project, will prevent cars from driving through the road.
is needed now More than ever
The council website describes liveable neighbourhoods as “people-centred” areas of the city which are: “safe, healthy, inclusive, and attractive places where everyone can breathe clean air have access to better quality green spaces and safe spaces to play, and feel a part of a community.”

Despite the snow, planters were installed in Redfield without issue
The East Bristol project is the council’s first trial of the liveable neighbourhood scheme which will see the installation of planters and three 24-hour bus gates across various parts of East Bristol including Barton Hill and parts of Redfield and St George.
However, the East Bristol trial has become controversial with some residents.
A private ‘STOP The East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood Road Closures’ group on Facebook has over 2,000 members.
On November 14 protestors prevented council contractors from installing planters from the top of Marsh Lan in Barton Hill.
One protestor told Bristol24/7 that they believed the scheme was taking residents’ “rights away…it’s not a solution to lock us in. It reminds me of lockdown.”
However, despite some grumblings from residents on Tuesday morning, the Redfield planters were installed without issue.
Work began on the East Bristol trial on October 28. The final phase of the project, phase five, is expected to be completed by January 10 2025.
