Doctor Who’s Tardis appears in Bristol

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jun 16, 2022

In a cut-through between Small Street and Broad Street usually only used by lawyers or coffee addicts looking for the quickest way between Small Street Espresso and Full Court Press, one of the most famous objects in British television has appeared.

The police box – in fact a time and space machine from Gallifrey, the Doctor’s home planet – is an acronym, with Tardis standing for ‘time and relative dimension in space’.

On Thursday, it appeared in Bristol while scenes for Doctor Who with David Tennant and Catherine Tate were being filmed on Broad Street, which had become London in 1925.

Tennant and Tate exited the alleyway onto Broad Street and after Tennant glanced right – towards where dozens of onlookers were watching proceedings – carried on towards St John on the Wall church.

The pair then stopped to talk outside the Guildhall before crossing over the road.

A green screen had been erected close to Chez Marcel, transformed for the shooting into Mr Emporium toyshop, rumoured to be the be the business of the Celestial Toymaker played by Neil Patrick Harris.
