Evacuated Barton House residents face norovirus outbreak at hotel
Evacuated Barton Hill residents staying at Holiday Inn have had to contend with a norovirus outbreak at the hotel.
Reports of vomiting, diarrhoea and rashes among residents led to letters being sent out with advice to stop the spread of the virus.
The outbreak has prompted the involvement of the UK Health Security Agency, and a meeting with the hotel management, UKHSA, Bristol City Council and the Integrated Care Board to decide what action should be taken to prevent further spread.
is needed now More than ever
Residents are being urged to quarantine in their room for at least two days after they have been sick, with testing among residents taken ill, food being brought to rooms, new bedding and additional cleaning being provided to try and stop the spread.
The letter, shared by Barton House resident, and ACORN housing union member, Shaban Ali on X, said: “As you may be aware, a number of residents have recently been unwell with reports of diarrhoea and vomiting, believed to be norovirus, with others also reporting having a rash. Most of those affected have recovered.”
“The decision was made to continue with infection prevention and control measures, in addition stool (poo) pots will be provided to residents experiencing symptoms to provide samples.”
The letter added: “All age groups can be affected, although spread is more rapid where large groups gather e.g. children attending children’s clubs or group activities at a hotel.”
Over 60 households from Barton House are believed to have been living at the hotel for more than two months, and there have been complaints about their conditions there over the standard of food and communication from the council.
Earlier this month, residents were told they would be able to return to the building on February 23, with work continuing to install fire safety systems this month.
