By Milan Perera  Monday Jul 8, 2024

A fire at a restaurant left two people needing to be taken to hospital.

The fire at Lona broke out at around 10pm on Sunday evening and caused the closure of Gloucester Road.

Owner Milaan Hawzhin said that he was “relieved” that customers and staff managed to all evacuate the building.

The staff at Lona Grill House and Juice Bar were busy clearing and cleaning the venue from Sunday’s fire on Monday morning

When Bristol24/7 visited Lona on Monday morning, staff were busy clearing and cleaning the restaurant.

“I was relieved to evacuate everyone inside the restaurant in time,” said Hawzhin, whose popular restaurant specialises in Lebanese chargrilled meats and mezze dishes.

Hawzhin remains optimistic of a swift reopening but said: “It’ll take at least eight weeks for insurance to sort things out.”

Avon Fire & Rescue said the cause of the fire is thought to have been “accidental ignition”.

The fire started in the kitchen area, with a dozen firefighters wearing breathing apparatus deployed in the operation.
