First contract announced to restore Underfall Yard
Underfall Yard will inch towards a new life, with restoration of the Shipwrights building due to start soon.
After a devastating fire reduced the site to ruins in May 2023, this is the first contract announced by the trustees that will include erection of external and internal scaffolding, roof repairs and reinstatement of workshop services in the Shipwrights building.
With the appointment of Stone BCI as a contractor, the director of Underfall Yard, Sarah Murray confirmed that “we are well on our way to recovery”.

She added: “We know Stone BCI are true professionals and experts in the repair of heritage buildings. We are certain they will do an excellent job.”
This appointment also marks the end of phase one in the repair and reinstatement project, which was originally submitted to the council in June.
Phase two marks the actual rebuilding of the damaged and destroyed structures depending on planning approval and funding.

Managing director of the Bristol-based construction company, Stuart Jones hoped to restore the building to its “former glory”.
He added: “Our programme of repairs will see it reinstated as a workshop for the Yard’s boatbuilders. This building is a real slice of history, and we look forward to renovating such an important part of Bristol’s harbourside with integrity, care and craftsmanship.”
With the Shipwrights building being repaired, Underfall Yard will be able to welcome back a boatbuilding business and move closer towards its original function of a thriving boatyard.
Cafe and shops within the yard are still open for the public to access.
Murray said: “The yard remains open to visitors, and businesses are still running here where safe to do so. You can support us by popping in for a visit and a coffee at our café, where all proceeds go directly back into Underfall Yard Trust.”
