Floods force pubs to close
Walkers and would-be pub goers surveyed the high water levels that rendered the Chequers Inn and the Old Lock & Weir unreachable on Saturday.
“Back up we go I guess,” said one person to their companion as they looked forlornly out over the flooded car park at Hanham Lock where the outside seating areas and road access were entirely submerged.
The Chequers sign was just visible above the water as flooding once again forced both of the pubs to close last week.
is needed now More than ever
Chequers was able to reopen on Sunday although flood water has taken its toll on the pub’s garden.
It comes almost exactly a year after the two pubs both had to close temporarily due to floods.

The Lock & Weir team posted on Facebook: “Taking a rain check. Our pub is currently swimming with the tides, and therefore closed due to flooding. Stay tuned as we work on drying things out. Thanks for your patience and support.”
A post from the Chequers team on Friday said: “Unfortunately, due to the current flood levels we will be unable to trade today and will remain closed.
“We are hopeful that the situation will improve and will be back open as soon as possible. We will be sure to keep you updated.”
