Former aircraft hangar could be transformed into ‘community hub’
A new library, cafe, gym and social centre could be contained within a Grade II listed aircraft hangar which once hosted Battle of Britain fighter planes.
Hangar 16U is planned to be part of the Brabazon development on the former Filton airfield.
King Street-based architects Ferguson Mann are behind the plans unveiled by YTL Developments, who say that the historic building will be “transformed into an incredible 21st century community hub”.

The hangar began life in the service of the Royal Flying Corps and continued to act as a facility for the RAF until the Second World War, when it housed both Spitfires and Hawker Hurricane fighter aircrafts.
The new building will retain historic features including prefabricated Belfast trusses of the roof and its intricate red brickwork, which YTL say “is echoed within the urban design of the new houses and apartments” at Brabazon.

YTL Developments planning & development director, Seb Loyn, said that the restoration of Hangar 16U “will see this historic structure return to its rightful place as the centre of community life”.
Loyn said: “As a vibrant local hub and multi-use space, it will celebrate culture, nurture social bonds and be a focal point for the new community at Brabazon.”
