Former Catholic church for sale: ‘no sordid use’ allowed
A former church for sale in south Bristol has an intriguing condition for a potential new owner.
When Holy Cross in Bedminster was closed in 2022 after a century, it was – in the words of the Catholic Church – relegated “to profane but not sordid use”.
The decision to close the church was taken due to a fall in the number of worshipers and the need for expensive urgent repairs to the building on Dean Lane.
is needed now More than ever
The church is now being marketed as a development for sale by Burston Cook, with the price on application.
It sits on a site of approximately half an acre which is also occupied by a neighbouring presbytery built in the 1960s.
The church itself has an approximate internal area of 5,700 sq ft (530 sq m).

As well as no future sordid use, the sale is subject to a restriction to ensure that there are no new openings or windows created that would overlook the next door Holy Cross Primary School.
Some of the stained glass windows will be removed prior to a sale, with other ecclesiastical items including stone altars, tabernacle, statues, the baldacchino, hanging cross, the organ and benches also being removed.
