Former pub finally demolished

By Martin Booth  Monday Feb 5, 2024

All that remains of a former pub is a pile of bricks.

The Gainsborough in Lockleaze has been in a sorry state for many years and is now no more; its demolition due to kickstart a new development.

Forty-seven homes are due to be built on Branwhite Close behind the site of the former pub, with a cafe set to front onto Gainsborough Square.

Bristol24/7 first reported in 2015 about a possible compulsory purchase order for the pub.

But it took until September 2023 for the city council to buy the building still known by many locals as the Blue Boy, in order so they could knock it down.

The building’s owner Mushtaq Ahmed was unwilling to sell and was fined more than £10,000 for ignoring warnings and failing to carry out maintenance work on three properties in the city.

It remains unknown how much the compulsory purchase order cost the council.
