Fox cub rescued by fire service after fall into church basement
Rescuers from the RSPCA and Avon Fire & Rescue teams say they were amazed to find that a fox cub, which had fallen 20 feet into the basement of St Luke’s Church in Redfield, was physically unharmed after the tumble.
A passer-by noticed the little cub stuck on the lightwell of the church. When they realised it was unable to escape on its own, they made a call to the RSPCA’s emergency line who sent a team of local helpers to the scene for a miraculous recovery.

RSPCA inspector Simon Coombs says he believed the fox had lost his footing when it fell and became trapped. “It’s a long way down. It’s very narrow and the walls are vertical so there was absolutely no way he would have made it out on his own,” he told Bristol24/7. Due to how far down the fox cub had fallen, Avon Fire & Rescue team were contacted for use of their special equipment. Using a long ladder, they were able to reach the depths of the church basement to guide the animal into a crate provided by the RSPCA.

The fox cub was then checked for injuries, and, despite his ordeal, the cub was in completely unharmed. Soon after, the RSPCA decided it was appropriate to release the cub back into the streets where he trotted off happily, hopefully avoiding any future falls.
Inspector Coombs concluded by saying: “Our thanks go to the alert passer-by for reporting the incident to us and also to Avon Fire & Rescue Service who did such a great job”.
