Fundraiser to buy toys and sweets for children living at hotel attacked by far-right mob

By Martin Booth  Sunday Aug 4, 2024

A fundraiser has been set up to buy toys and sweets for children living at a hotel for asylum seekers that was targeted by the far-right.

A human shield of counter-protesters protected the Mercure hotel in Redcliffe from attack on Saturday evening.

The small group of counter-protesters bravely defended themselves as an angry mob attempted to break into the hotel before police arrived.

Writing on Sunday, fundraiser organiser Toni Mayo said: “Yesterday saw a small number of racists cause disorder in Bristol, including marching on the hotel where a number of migrant families are held.

“Bristol is a proud anti-fascist city and we outnumbered them hugely, and prevented them from getting to the hotel.

“It must have been frightening for the children in the hotel, and we want to show them they are welcome here.

“We’re doing a collection for some sweets and toys which we’ll deliver tomorrow or Tuesday.”
