Geoff Twentyman to leave Radio Bristol after 30 years
After three decades, a much-respected broadcaster is stepping back from behind the microphone.
Geoff Twentyman played for Bristol Rovers and Preston North End before joining BBC Radio Bristol in 1993 where he presents shows dedicated to the city’s sports teams.
Twentyman’s dad, also called Geoff, played for Liverpool but was best known for being legendary manager Bill Shankly’s chief scout.
is needed now More than ever
Twentyman Jnr said his role “was one of the best jobs in and around Bristol”, telling listeners to The Scrum on Tuesday evening that he will be “easing down” in order to spend more time with his family, including a fourth grandchild who is due in June.
“I leave with a heavy heart, obviously, as I’ve got a real passion for radio and Radio Bristol,” he said.
“But I’ve got no regrets. I’m really excited about the future. Big thanks to the BBC for putting up with me for 30 years but most importantly to you for listening. It has been amazing.”
Twentyman’s last show on Radio Bristol will be Sound of the City on May 22.
BBC West and South West head, Stephanie Marshall, said that Twentyman is “the West Country’s favourite Scouser, loved and recognised by fans across the city – blue and red.”
Marshall added: “The team at Radio Bristol and our listeners will miss him but he’ll be on air to see the football season to the end – so there’s plenty of time for us all to say thank you and wish him all the best.”
Twentyman’s announcement comes as many of his colleagues across the BBC local radio network are having to reapply for their own jobs as the corporation prepares to halve the current 100-hour output per week specific to local areas.
BBC staff including at Radio Bristol will be taking part in a 24-hour strike on May 5 to coincide with the local election results.
