Go ahead for 500-bed student accommodation in Bristol Temple Quarter
Plans to build accommodation to house 500 students near Temple Meads have been given the green light.
Unite Students say the development on what they are calling Freestone Island will help fulfil housing needs for students in the emerging Temple Quarter project, which includes Bristol University’s new £300m campus.
The company is also set to build a 600-bed student accommodation scheme just a stone’s throw off Feeder Road in St Philip’s.
is needed now More than ever
Unite bosses say the £73m Freestone Island development will be set to open for the 2026/27 academic year as part of the Temple Quarter regeneration scheme.

Tom Brewerton, group development director at Unite Students, said: “Bristol is one of the most undersupplied markets in the UK for purpose-built student accommodation with two strong universities and limited availability of land for this type of accommodation.
“Our Freestone Island project provides Unite Students with the opportunity to grow further in the city by providing high quality, value for money rooms for our students and university partners. We look forward to starting the construction phase as swiftly as possible and delivering the scheme in time for the 2026/27 academic year.”
