Gourmet chicken coming soon to Whiteladies Road
The former CEO of Domino’s Pizza has invested in a new restaurant and takeaway opening soon on Whiteladies Road that hopes to become the first of a national chain.
Chris Moore has become non-executive chairman of Happy Bird, which has been founded by former corporate lawyer Adam Batty.
The chickens due to be on the menu are set to be happy chickens – until they are killed. Happy Bird promises to serve gourmet chicken using free-to-roam chickens from Yorkshire.
is needed now More than ever
The owners promise that these chickens – which are fed on corn and a supplement of fresh herbs – will have a superior texture and flavour.
Fried chicken using organic birds was the concept attempted by Chicken Shed at Cargo in Wapping Wharf, which closed after finding that because organic chickens live longer, the pieces are larger with thicker skin, which, ironically, does not make for the best fried chicken.
The chickens at Happy Bird are not organic but are described as “high welfare”.

Happy Bird will be opening in the former Vodafone shop at Clifton Down Shopping Centre
Batty said: “We think great quality chicken, that tastes like chicken used to taste, should not be the exclusive preserve of a handful of the finest restaurants in the city.
“Fast, convenient chicken shouldn’t mean a deep fried, MSG-crammed four-week-old bird, factory-farmed in Thailand.
“You won’t find a zero welfare, tasteless bird grilled to high heaven, hiding behind a load of hot sauces here at Happy Bird. We believe the great Bristol public deserves better.”
Happy Bird is due to open at the end of January in what was most recently a Vodafone shop and there are already plans in place to have more than one Happy Bird in Bristol before expanding across the South West and later the UK.
