Hamilton House protesters demonstrate on King Street

By Taya Bryant-Henry  Monday Oct 15, 2018

Save Hamilton House protesters took their anger to the cobbles of King Street on Monday afternoon.

Supporters gathered outside the offices of entrepreneur Gavin Eddy, whose Framework coworking space occupies the building.

Hamilton House owners Connolly & Callaghan (C&C) have appointed Eddy’s Forward Space to take over management of Hamilton House from Coexist, who have been the custodians of the famous Stokes Croft building since 2008.

Protesters on Monday loudly voiced their displeasure at this decision.

Protesters carried a variety of homemade placards

Emily Trott has worked at Hamilton House for almost five years. She told Bristol24/7: “I am here as I don’t believe Gavin Eddy’s values are with Coexist and I just don’t think he can just swoop in and take over!”

A spokesperson for the Save Hamilton House campaign Hamilton said that the protest “was a fast response to the news that Gavin Eddy intends to begin moving into Hamilton House later this week and was intended to let Gavin know that if he chooses to continues in his work supporting C&C in their aim to close down Coexist, as a community we will continue to call him out on this at every opportunity”.

A C&C spokesperson said that Forward Space “provides consultancy, advice and mentoring to work space operators, supporting them in setting up, managing and growing successful spaces”, adding that the business is “one of the country’s leading shared work space operators”.

The spokesperson added: “We do not wish to see Coexist exit the Hamilton House community. We wish to release them from the responsibility for space management so that they can focus on the community outreach that is their core value.

“We hope Coexist will agree to participate with Forward Space to create a viable business plan for Hamilton House.”
