Hero Fiennes Tiffin back in Bristol to film Young Sherlock

By Martin Booth  Monday Jan 13, 2025

Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Dónal Finn and Natascha McElhone have been filming for Young Sherlock in Bristol.

The trio play Sherlock Holmes, James Moriarty and Cordelia Holmes in the Amazon Prime production, with Zine Tseng (Princess Gulun Shou’an) also spotted on Broad Street on Monday.

More filming has taken place on Tailors Court off Broad Street, following shoots at other locations for the Guy Ritchie-directed series including Small Street, Underfall Yard and Queen Square.

The action for Young Sherlock, based on the novels by Andrew Lane, takes place in the 1870s, with Bristol previously doubling as Oxford where Holmes is an undergraduate student.

A carriage awaits outside the Clayton Hotel

Natascha McElhone plays Cordelia Holmes, described as “Sherlock’s devoted mother, artist and matriarch of the Holmes clan”

Dónal Finn is Moriarty, Sherlock’s archnemesis

Zine Tseng plays Gulun Shou’an, a “Chinese princess, Oxford University scholar and skilled martial artist”

A script seen by Bristol24/7 reveals that the action for one scene filmed on Broad Street took place next to a taxidermy shop – actually part of the Clayton Hotel – with displays of pinned insects in the window.

Moriarty and Cordelia are waiting outside when Sherlock “emerges victorious” with some butterflies.

He talks about a birthday gift to Beatrice and tells them he was given an address of Bedford Row in Holborn.

“Shall we?” says Cordelia, before the trio climb into a carriage and drive off.
