The highest high tide Bristol has seen for years

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Mar 12, 2024

Bristol has seen its highest high tide for many years.

Police closed part of Cumberland Basin Road soon after 9am on Tuesday morning but not before a BMW driver had got his car stuck in the floodwaters after foolishly attempting to drive towards the Portway.

Water spilled over the lock gates next to the Pump House pub and into Bathurst Basin, while the Chocolate Path beside the New Cut was completely submerged.

Bristol Port Company’s tug boat Graham Robertson sailed from the New Cut to the River Avon as water lapped the docks buildings next to the Cumberland Basin entrance locks.

Further down the Portway, cars were forced to pull over due to flooding beneath the Suspension Bridge; while foolhardy cyclists got their feet wet misjudging the depth of the floodwaters.
