By Abbie James  Wednesday Sep 6, 2023

A group of friends from Bristol will be embarking on an impressive charity climb up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Starting on October 14, twenty Bristolians will be climbing the highest peak in Africa to raise money for Caring in Bristol.

Caring in Bristol is a charity who work with people at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness and vulnerable living.

The group have already raised enough money to cover the cost of their trip and now need help achieving their fundraising goal of £120,000.

Starting from Machame Gate, a team of twenty Bristolians will commence a rigorous ten-day trek.

The team will experience an altitude of an astonishing 5895 metres to raise money for the local cause.

Among the team of twenty are some well-known names from Bristol’s hospitality scene. Magdalena Pietrykowska, Dominic Borel and Benjamin Harvey are three of the great minds behind the Bianchis group.

Josh Eggleton is perhaps best known for his restaurant the Pony Chew Valley.

Olivia Barry is the chef and co-owner of Adelina Yard.

Hannah Catley is the owner and baker behind Lockdown Loaves and the recently opened Catley’s in Clifton.

Simon MacDonnell is the managing director of Papadeli.

Toby Gritten is the chef proprietor from the Pump House.

The rest of the team includes: Julia Lockhart, Lorne Kramer, Steve Parker, Kimberley Puxty, Amy Edwards, Jacob Hawkings, Caroline Howes, David Johnston, Craig Still, Daniel Robinson and Antonia May Cross.

Dominic Borel said “We hope this challenge will inspire other people to attempt something like this.

“It’s really important to raise money for a charity in our hometown tackling the issue of homelessness and to use our platforms to shine a light on this cause.”

Toby Gritten said “The people Caring in Bristol support are really vulnerable – they’re not just homeless people but also people who are living vulnerably and facing homelessness.

“The charity aims to solve the problem before it actually becomes a problem and support people with food, shelter and other resources.”

Donations can be made on Just Giving and raffle tickets to win a selection of restaurant visits, hotel stays, days out and more can be purchased here.

Plans are in motion for an event outside the Pump House on October 7, featuring creations from the chefs involved, all in the spirit of raising additional funds. More events are planned for following the team’s triumphant return from their incredible journey.
