Human remains found in suitcase on bridge

By Karen Johnson  Thursday Jul 11, 2024

One suitcase with human remains inside it was left on Clifton Suspension Bridge late on Wednesday evening, with another suitcase also containing human remains later found nearby.

A forensic post-mortem is due to take place in an attempt to identify the remains, with a search now underway for the man who travelled to the bridge by taxi before leaving the two suitcases.

The man was spotted on the bridge at around 11.57pm with one suitcase.

The second suitcase also containing human remains was found not far away sometime later.

The Suspension Bridge has remained closed throughout Thursday as investigations, led by Avon & Somerset police’s major crime investigation team, are continuing.

Acting Bristol police commander Vicks Hayward-Melen said: “This is a very disturbing incident and I fully recognise the concern it will cause in our communities.

“Our immediate priority is to locate the man who took the suitcases to the bridge, identify the deceased, and inform their next of kin.

“Specialist officers are ready to provide them with any support they need.”

Following the discovery of the suitcases, a search of the area around the bridge was carried out by police officers on the ground as well as the National Police Air Service and the coastguard.
